Douglas L. Wong’s Combat White Lotus Kung-Fu
For over 30 years, Douglas Lim Wong has been one of the world’s most prolific martial artists. A multi-published author, stunt coordinator and kung-fu instructor, Wong is considered one of Chinese Martial Art’s true pioneers. After achieving expertise in such varied styles as wing chun, five animals and white tiger, Wong went on to create his own synthesis, the white lotus system. In this landmark DVD, Wong reveals the combative aspects of this unique system, teaching martial artists of all styles and levels how to make kung-fu effective in street situations. He strips away the mystique that gives kung-fu an almost mystic effect, demonstrating ancient principles of combat refined for modern application. A must for any martial arts DVD library! Able to teach yourself martial arts?
Anyone have any sucess teaching themselves martial arts from books/dvds?
Anyone who answers yes has no idea if they did because without a proper teacher they will never know if they are any good nor actually doing it correctly…so there for they are full of it.
You cannot teach yourself martial arts. It is a science that needs an experienced teacher to help you understand it. This is a fact. I have met many so called self trained people over the years and not a single one was worth anything when it came to actually doing the skills they claimed they had correctly. They were easily bested by lower ranking students at our dojo when they attempted to claim they were good at martial arts.

Are there any good martial art instruction DVDs?
just to help and do some extra work outside of classes
There are many good martial arts instructional DVD’s. Obviously they’re no substitute for actual instruction, but they can help supplement your knowledge. Unfortunately the bad ones far outnumber the good. There are very few I’d endorse. Anything by Mark Hatmaker is pretty good; for head-and-arm chokes, "Fade to Black" by Jason Quick is excellent; the Panther videos that Larry Tatum put out were rather informative; Kelly McCann, AKA Jim Grover, put out some simple-but-effective self-defense videos. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any other good ones at the moment. But yes, they’re out there. Just read the reviews and make sure it’s something you’d like before you lay down the dollars on it. More importantly, get someone who knows what they’re doing to help you with your training. For example, I train with Hatmaker several times a year, and he can correct me on what I’m doing wrong.
