Martial arts elitist behavior?
I’m just curious if others shared a similar observation concerning answers given on the MA section. It seems that there are some philosophical differences that tend to have become degrading toward other people’s style and schools. Although many people take martial arts for differing reasons, and certainly, there are good and bad schools out there, it seems that many online wish to bash other’s MA training. Isn’t the whole point of martial training for the betterment of self, or have we allowed ourselves to degenerate into common thugs? If so, what is the cause of this?
Well there are some good answers here, but also some that stem from similiar elitism.
What Martial Art compliments Karate best?
I’m 16 and have been doing karate for 8 years and have achieved 1st Dan and would like to try something new. There is a Krav Maga club nearby but it is for over 18s only. Is there any other martial arts that compliment karate such as Wing Chun or Bujikan?
a first degree black belt only means you have an understand of the basics and nothing more. you have barely learned anything about karate. i doubt you full understand all the grappling involved, as for krav maga all the techniques in krav maga are in your kata, if you understand the bunkai, oyo , Kakushi, Henka and sutemi of kata. which you haven’t reach those level of application yet.
What are some good martial arts documentaries?
I currently study isshinryu karate, but I’m into watching documentaries about any martial arts (not that UFC stuff) that cover history, philosophy, moves, etc. Anyone got any suggestions on what DVDs I should take a look at? Thanks
Ive seen all the human weapon and fight quest epidsodes, but they arent on anymore

Is it better to do weight lifting immediately before martial arts training or some other time?
I have a lot of time at my disposal, but I’d rather train BJJ from Mon to Sat, with Sunday being an off day. I’m doing Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. Should I do this (or any) routine immediately before martial arts or some other time?
You should never lift weights immediately before doing martial arts. Most weight routines contract the muscles, making them shorter along with lactic acid build up and stiffness and soreness especially at the joints and insertion points. In martial arts you are doing a lot of extension type movement along with putting a lot of stress on the areas that can least accommodate it which is the joint and muscles at the insertion point. It is better to have at least a few if not several hours of rest in between or do your strength training after martial arts. You will more easily avoid pulls, strains and tears if you have adequate rest and/or do weights afterwords.
JJ Machado Online Training : Sit Out with Arm Trap
Guest Instructor Jay Zeballos demonstrates a counter from the turtle position.
When attempting a sit out reversal from the turtle position, one common counter especially if your opponent is larger than you, is to bear hug your torso. This variation of the sit out exploits your opponents grip, allowing you to reverse the position.
